Activity: Skip-counting by 6s and 7s, combined with 6 and 7 math facts. Students are standing for this activity. They are handed laminated cards with numbers on them. There are 24 cards. One set includes, 0, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60, 66, 72. Another set includes 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63, 70, 77, 84. For a larger class, the remaining students can be “checkers” and “scribes”. Depending on the number of students in class the 0 cards can be removed, followed by the multiples of 12 and 11. There are two designated places for the students to form lines. Students are instructed to line up in the correct line and in the correct order without talking to each other. The student with the 0 card checks the order of the multiples for their line. The students are now in teams (The 6s and the 7s). “The 7s” walk in a line past “The 6s” while skip-counting by 6. Next, “The 6s” determine what multiple they are and take turns stating the 6 math facts. This activity is then repeated with “The 6s” walking in a line past “The 7s”. “The 7s” will then determine what multiple they have and take turns stating the 7 math facts. Explain to the students that a multiple is how many times you have 6 or 7 in this case. Where they are in the line will give them a clue as to what multiple they are. Take a Mindful Minute: Students are asked to sit back in their seats for a “Mindful Minute”. “Feet are flat on the floor, backs are straight, hands are still in our laps. We will now take five nice slow breaths while watching the breathing ball. Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale.”
