Activity: Skip-counting by 8’s and 9’s, combined with 8 and 9 math facts. Students are standing for this activity. They are handed laminated cards with numbers on them. There are 24 cards. One set includes, 0, 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80, 88, 96. Another set includes 0, 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90, 99, 108. For a larger class, the remaining students can be “checkers” and “scribes”. Depending on the number of students in class the 0 cards can be removed, followed by the multiples of 12 and 11. There are two designated places for the students to form lines. Students are instructed to line up in the correct line and in the correct order without talking to each other. The student with the 0 card checks the order of the multiples for their line. The students are now in teams (The 8’s and the 9’s). “The 9’s” walk in a line past “The 8’s” while skip-counting by 8. Next, “The 8’s” determine what multiple they are and take turns stating the 8 math facts. This activity is then repeated with “The 8’s” walking in a line past “The 9’s”. “The 9’s” will then determine what multiple they have and take turns stating the 9 math facts.
Take a Mindful Minute: Students are asked to sit back in their seats for a “Mindful Minute”. “Feet are flat on the floor, backs are straight, hands are still in our laps. We will now take five nice slow breaths while watching the breathing ball. Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale.”
