Review Expectations; Student Responsibilities I will listen carefully to the instructions and will follow them. I will make safe and responsible choices. I will respect the equipment and use it safely. I will respect and encourage my classmates. I will do my best!
Activity: Multiplying by 3, 4, and 9 Review with students the connection between skip counting and multiplication. Assign students to groups of four and distribute materials and instructions. Assign clear rolls for each student. Create “Agility Course” by skip counting. One team creates the 9 skip-count station by laying down an agility ladder and placing the floor markers in the correct order skip counting by 9s. One team creates the 4 skip-count station by laying down an agility ladder and placing the floor markers in the correct order skip counting by 4s. One team creates the 3 skip-count station by laying down an agility ladder and placing the floor markers in the correct order skip counting by 3s. After setting up the three stations, the teams spend 10 minutes at each station. The first 2 minutes the students are jogging through the course practicing and refreshing their skip-counting. The students then take turns rolling the dice and skip-counting to the correct answer. The students take turns being the dice roller and the fact checker with the calculator. Students rotate through the activity for 8 minutes and then change stations. The teams clean up the stations and go back to the classroom.
Take a Mindful Minute: Students are asked to sit back in their seats for a “Mindful Minute”. “Feet are flat on the floor, backs are straight, hands are still in our laps. We will now take five nice slow breaths while watching the breathing ball. Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale.”
OPTIONS: Math Agility by 8s and 12s The student helpers set up a course for 8s and a course for 12s using the agility ladders and numbered floor markers. The students are split into two groups and spend 2-5 minutes going through the skip counting circuits. They then take turns rolling the big dice and skip-counting to the correct answer. After 10 minutes the teams switch stations.
