Materials: Space to do a relay race. Two or three sets of multiplication by 2 facts. Noise cancelling headphones for students with sound sensitivities.
Accommodations: Make necessary accommodations based on the needs of individual students. Seated students can act as the “math fact checker”. Provide noise cancelling headphones for students with noise sensitivities.
Review Expectations; Student Responsibilities I will listen carefully to the instructions and will follow them. I will make safe and responsible choices. I will respect the equipment and use it safely. I will respect and encourage my classmates. I will do my best!
Activity: Students are divided into two or three teams. For each team there is a station with a “math fact giver” and a “math fact checker”. When the student arrives at the math fact station, he or she hands the baton to the “math fact checker”. The “math fact giver” gives a math fact from the stack of cards and once the student answers it correctly, the “math fact checker” gives the baton back to the student who then returns to his or her team. The cards have the fact on one side and the answer on the back, so that the player and the “math fact checker” can both see clearly at the same time. Take a Mindful Minute: Students are asked to sit back in their seats for a “Mindful Minute”. “Feet are flat on the floor, backs are straight, hands are still in our laps. We will now take five nice slow breaths while watching the breathing ball. Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale.”
