Shaker Skip Counting by 2s Materials: Provide one shaker per student or students can make their own shakers as a pre-activity to this lesson. Students can decorate empty small single-use water bottles, fill them with rice and then glue on the lid. Space to move without bumping in to one another. Noise cancelling headphones for students with sound sensitivities.
Accommodations: Make necessary accommodations based on the needs of individual students. Seated students can tap one hand on their desks instead of walking and use a shaker in the other hand. Provide noise cancelling headphones for students with noise sensitivities. Visual representations of an even number of items.
Review Expectations; Student Responsibilities I will listen carefully to the instructions and will follow them. I will make safe and responsible choices. I will respect the equipment and use it safely. I will respect and encourage my classmates. I will do my best!
Activity: Students gather in a circle facing inwards and then turn to their right. Students prepare to walk in a circle counter-clockwise beginning with the left foot (or the one inside the circle) while holding their shakers in their right hands.
Teacher prompts with “We will step with our left and say “1” and then step with our right and say “2” with a shake of our shakers. “Ready, Set, Step with your left, 1, …”. The students experience an even skip counting pattern, because the shaker always matches the foot that is stepping on the outside of the circle. The movement reinforces the even skip counting pattern. For the second-round students are instructed to skip count by 2’s. Demonstrate for the students and point out that now we only say the number with the shaker. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 1, 18, 20, 22, 24. All these numbers are even numbers and we know this because we are always stepping on our right foot when we say the number. Remember that if we have an even number of cookies, we can divide them evenly between two people.
Ring the chime to signal the students to stop and listen. Instruct students to put their shakers away and sit back at their desks.
Take a Mindful Minute: Students are asked to sit back in their seats for a “Mindful Minute”. “Feet are flat on the floor, backs are straight, hands are still in our laps. We will now take five nice slow breathes while watching the breathing ball. Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale.”
