Materials: Space to set up an agility course Floor markers skip counting by 6s and 7s (sidewalk chalk or masking tape work too) Two sets of laminated cards numbered 1-12, or big dice Two calculators (optional, but the “fact checkers” love using them) Noise cancelling headphones for students with sound sensitivities
Accommodations: Make necessary accommodations based on the needs of individual students. Provide noise cancelling headphones for students with noise sensitivities. Print outs of the seated agility option with dice.
Review Expectations; Student Responsibilities I will listen carefully to the instructions and will follow them. I will make safe and responsible choices. I will respect the equipment and use it safely. I will respect and encourage my classmates. I will do my best!
Activity: The class is divided into two groups and designated students are assigned to set up the 2 courses. The colored discs are set up in a zig-zag pattern skip-counting by 6s and 7s accordingly. Students spend 2-5 minutes (depending on the number of students) zigzagging through the course and skip counting accordingly. One student from each team is assigned to begin as “fact checker” and stands at the end of the course with the calculator. The students then begin to pull a random card from the deck of cards labeled 1-12 and they skip count while zigzagging to the answer. After the “fact checker” confirms the student’s answer, he or she gives the calculator to the next student and gets back in line. After 10-15 minutes students switch stations.
Take a Mindful Minute: Students are asked to sit back in their seats for a “Mindful Minute”. “Feet are flat on the floor, backs are straight, hands are still in our laps. We will now take five nice slow breaths while watching the breathing ball. Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale.”
